What are infographics and why are they useful for your website?

Infographics are visual representations of data, information, and knowledge that allow complex topics to be easily understood. They can be used to convey a message, tell a story or explain a concept in a visually appealing way. Infographics are becoming increasingly popular for web content, and for good reason: they can help make a website more interesting and informative while attracting visitors and encouraging them to stay on the page.

So what are infographics?

The word is derived from the fusion of the phrase “information graphics”. In other words, it’s a way to represent complex data visually. This allows you to explain complex topics and concepts in a way that is accessible and intuitive to readers. By the way, the purpose of an infographic can be to inform and entertain your audience. The best examples combine both.

Infographics most often contain a combination of text, (stylized) images, and diagrams. They can be used in many different ways. Research shows that about 90% of the information we remember is due to our visual impressions. Therefore, the best use for these types of visuals is to use them to convey information that will grab attention and be remembered at a glance for as long as possible.

Types of infographics

There are different types of infographics, according to their structure and the type of information they present:

  1. Infographic illustrating a process. This is an infographic that presents the steps of a certain process. Most often they are presented sequentially from top to bottom or left to right.
  2. Comparative. This variety aims to compare two different options most objectively. In this case, a two-column layout is most often used.
  3. Statistical. This type of infographic tells a story using data sets. It most often uses standard ways of visualizing data in mathematics and statistics, such as pie and bar charts.
  4. Chronological. It is used to highlight important dates or to give an overview of a series of events whose relationship in time is relevant.
  5. An informational infographic is used to clarify a topic or inform people about a concept that is new to them.

In terms of the technologies through which they are created and their level of interactivity, infographics can be

  1. Static. These are the simplest, but also the most common types and probably exactly what you imagine when you hear the word “infographic”. They are used in blogs, articles, brochures, and even posters. While static infographics don’t “wink,” there are many ways in which they can become attention-grabbing and even create a sense of visual dynamism – for example, using different types of illustrations, photographs, color combinations, and stylized symbols.
  2. Animated. As their name suggests, these types of infographics move. They are particularly well suited for drawing attention to the most important information, or for directing the eye in a particular direction. They’re most commonly used on social media but are just as suitable to complement articles, tutorials, etc.
  3. Interactive. This type of infographic requires some kind of action or choice on the part of the reader. They are particularly suited to large datasets where a simple static infographic wouldn’t be able to tell the story in enough detail. Interactive infographics allow the audience to either explore the available data on their own or be taken through a pre-set ‘storyline’.

Why is it advisable to use infographics on your website?

The short answer to that question is “Because they work”! They are engaging and eye-catching. They are easy to take in at a glance and their visual focus predisposes the audience to remember the information they present. If done right, they can establish your brand’s presence online.

Infographics can help make a website more attractive and professional looking. They can be used to break up large blocks of text as well as add a visual element. Not only will this make your website more attractive, but it will also improve the overall user experience.

Infographics can be included on any type of website. However, they are especially valuable if your business is in an industry that requires certain expertise. By adding them to your website, you can provide visitors with an easy way to learn more about your business or another important concept. This will help increase engagement with your content, encourage visitors to stay longer on your website and improve your potential or current customers’ awareness of topics important to you.

It’s no surprise that infographics are becoming an increasingly popular way to share information online: they’re content that users like. Any infographic you create for your website can easily be shared across the various social networks you maintain, giving you fresh, interesting, and quality content for multiple communication channels. If your infographic is insightful and topical, it will likely have great success on social media, and may even be reposted by more authoritative electronic media outlets. Thus, a single-quality infographic can play a key role in attracting more visitors to your website.
